[114.04] Radial Extinction in Spiral Disks.

B. W. Holwerda (Kapteyn Institute / STScI), R. A. Gonzalez (UNAM-Morelia), R. J. Allen (STScI), P. C. van der Kruit (Kapteyn Institute)

Dust absorption influences our perception of spiral galaxies. To characterize the absorption by cold dust, Gonzalez et al (1998) compared numbers of background field galaxies in HST/WFPc2 images and simulated fields; the original data with an extincted HDF field added. We have automated this "Synthetic Field Method" and applied it on a sample of face-on images from the HST archive. Based on our numbers of field galaxies, we present an average radial extinction profile for spiral disks.
