[14.24] The Massive Young Star Clusters of Extragalactic HII Regions

In October of 2002, we conducted JHK imaging using Kitt Peak 2.1 meter telescope with the SQIID infrared camera. We obtained images of young massive star clusters found embedded in HII regions of nearby galaxies. These young massive star clusters were selected by a recent radio survey conducted by Johnson et al. in 2001. Found in face-on spiral galaxies M33 and NGC6946, the young star clusters represent the youngest massive star populations found in these nearby galaxies. The massive young star populations will aid in understanding massive star formation and in pin-pointing the environments where massive stars form. Our data will enable us to determine age, extinction, and the infrared luminosity function of the young star clusters through the derived B-H-K relations. In this poster we will present and discuss our reduced data and derived properties of the young star clusters.
