We investigate the relationship between black hole mass, M\mathrm{BH}, and host galaxy velocity dispersion for QSOs in Data Release 1 (DR1) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS, www.sdss.org), using an automated spectrum fitting routine. We derive M\mathrm{BH}, from the broad H\beta line width and the bulge stellar velocity dispersion (\sigma*) from the [{\sc O iii}] narrow line width (\sigma\mathrm{[O~III}]). The results agree in the mean with the M\mathrm{BH}---\sigma*, relationship for nearby galaxies. Use of Mg {\sc ii} and [{\sc O ii}] in place of H\beta and [{\sc O iii}] allows work at redshifts up to z ~1.
