[135.03] Designing astronomy outreach activities and programs

I will present successful strategies used in designing outreach activities and programs for the Columbia University Observatory in Manhattan. The programs include informal education programs for kids, family workshops, and curriculum-centered programs for school groups. Our audience has grown a great deal over the past few years, and reflects the diversity of New York City - being drawn from both the Upper West Side and from Harlem. Our goal is to provide effective informal astronomy education to these populations, while sitting under very light polluted (and often cloudy) skies.
