[125.06] Evidence of a Curved Electron Spectrum in SN 1006

G.E. Allen, J.C. Houck (MIT CSR), S.J. Sturner (NASA/GSFC-USRA)

We present Chandra X-ray data for the eastern rim of the supernova remnant SN 1006. These data, and a compilation of radio data, were fit with a synchrotron emission model. The CANGAROO gamma-ray data were fit with a model of inverse Compton scattering of the cosmic microwave background radiation. The results of a joint fit to all three data sets are used to determine a self-consistent set of parameters (and 90% confidence intervals) describing the shape of the electron spectrum and the strength of the magnetic field in the remnant. The functional forms of the electron spectra include a power-law distribution in momentum with an exponential cutoff and a more general expression with a momentum-dependent power-law index. The results demonstrate that the electron spectrum of the supernova remnant, which implies that a significant fraction of the internal energy is in the form of cosmic rays.
