[49.08] Chandra and HST observations of M101

We obtained a 92 ks observation of M101 in Chandra AO-1, for which the S3 chip covered the nucleus and the bulk of the inner disk. We also obtained deep HST ACS images of the area covered by the S3 chip, and have identified the optical counterparts of about half of the X-ray point sources. Several other Chandra observations of M101, including our current 1Ms observation, are extending the X-ray coverage of the disk and pushing down the point source detection limits in the central disk. The current (anticipated) coverage by the S2-S3 chip pair is 200 (~450) square arcminutes, with a point source detection limit of 2x1036 (4x1035) ergs/s in the region within ~6 arcminutes (12 kpc) of the nucleus. This depth will allow detection of faint point source populations not yet seen in any galaxies save M31 and our own. As the 1Ms exposure is segmented to allow greater coverage and temporal monitoring, the 1Ms exposure will not be complete by the time of the talk, so I will discuss the luminosity functions only from the most recent compilation of data. I will also discuss the optical identifications with globular clusters, SNR, background galaxies, etc., which will allow a finer consideration of the luminosity function of individual types of objects.
