By z~3, a substantial portion of the universe was already populated with heavy elements produced in stars. Observations of these intergalactic metals can be used to characterize early star formation and feedback on cosmic scales. I will summarize the latest progress in cosmic metallicity field measurements, with special attention to what these data reveal about the early stars and galaxies that were the primary agents of chemical enrichment.
