A review of current X-ray binary theoretical models will be presented. The models will be compared, with the focus on their applicability and level of sophistication. The number of simplifying assumptions and most important uncertainties will be identified. I will use a set of StarTrack calculations to demonstrate what can be achieved with the state-of-art population synthesis code. In particular, I will describe how realistic synthetic X-ray luminosity functions are constructed. I will also show the influence of specific local conditions (metallicity, age, star formation history) on the X-ray populations and point out which ingredients are the most important factors in shaping the luminosity functions in different type of galaxies.
