Based on a large-scale 20cm survey of the Galactic center region, we show evidence for an order of magnitude increase in the number of faint linear filaments. Many of them show morphological characteristics similar to the Galactic center nonthermal radio filaments. The linear filaments are not isolated but are generally clustered in star forming regions. The extensions of many of these linear filaments appear to terminate at either a compact source or a resolved shell-like thermal source. We argue that the Galactic center filaments are locally generated and discuss their relationship with faint compact sources and extended thermal features.
