[41.28] The Spitzer 24micron Properties of optical/near-IR selected extremely red galaxies

L. Yan, P. Choi (Spitzer Science Center/Caltech), Spitzer Extragalactic First Look Survey Team

Optical/near-IR colors have been widely used by recent surveys for selecting galaxies with old stellar populations at z ~ 1. However, the relative contribution from the early type versus dust reddened systems to the total sample is not well determined by any of the previous data. In this paper, we will present the first, direct measurement of the dust enshrouded EROs using the mid-infrared data from the Spitzer Space Telescope. Our 24micron, Ks and R data reach 3sigma of 30microJy, 21 and 25.5 respectively, over ~64sq.armin. We will discuss the implication of our results to the surveys which study the properties of early type galaxies at z ~ 1 and the evolution of their mass functions between z ~ 0 and 1.
