[5.08] A New Code for Calculating Synthetic Spectra of Interacting Binaries

J. Budaj (Penn State University and Astronomical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences), M. T. Richards (Penn State University)

We have produced a new code, called SHELLSPEC, for calculating the synthetic spectra of interacting binaries. The code is designed to solve simple radiative transfer along the line of sight in 3D moving media in LTE. The code has been used to calculate the synthetic spectra of the Algol-type binary of TT Hya which has a well-developed accretion disk. These synthetic spectra have been compared with the observed spectra to derive independent constraints on the behavior of state quantities, the velocity field, and the geometry of the accretion disk.
