[74.13] The Compact Central Object in the Cassiopeia A Supernova Remnant

The X-ray compact central object (CCO) in the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant was discovered by the Chandra X-ray observatory during its first light observation on August 20, 1999. Since then, Chandra has observed the Cas A CCO many times. We have analyzed the spectral and timing properties of the CCO in the Chandra data. The spectrum is predominantly thermal, though there is some hint on a non-thermal component. The CCO does not show any signs of temporal changes during the four and a half years of Chandra observations. We present the results of our investigation and the current understanding of the nature of this object.
