If you would like to see the highest observatory in North America, please visit the University of Denver’s Meyer-Womble Observatory, situated near the summit of Mt. Evans, 35 miles west of Denver, at altitude 14,148 feet [4,303 meters; website: womble2.phys.du.edu]. Bring your camera – the views are spectacular. This trip is not advised for those with health problems that may be aggravated by high altitude and thin air. Tour vans will leave the meeting hotels at 9 a.m., arrive Echo Lake Lodge for a rest stop before proceeding to summit and observatory. Note: the road is paved and normally plowed to the top by Memorial Day weekend, but plan for much colder temperatures than in Denver by 30 degrees F. Following the observatory visit, we will stop for lunch, included, at Echo Lake Lodge, mountain sightseeing and finally return to Denver hotels by mid-afternoon. We recommend that travelers bring a personal water bottle.For those with a car, interested in the 11 a.m. open house: allow 2 hours travel time, each direction. By car, take I-70 west to Idaho Springs exit 240 [Mt. Evans, state highway 103] then south 15 miles to Echo Lake and junction with state highway 5 [USFS fee station access and Echo Lake Lodge restaurant, 303-871-2138] and then a final 14 miles [paved] to the summit.
