[4.08] Structure, Spectra, and Flaring in the M87 Jet

Some results of multi-year monitoring of the M87 jet with Chandra, HST, and the VLA are presented. The flaring knot, HST-1, in the X-rays currently out-shines the nucleus and the rest of the jet combined. The radio and optical intensities are also rising. There is reasonable evidence that the X-ray spectrum hardens with increasing intensity. We note the similarity of HST-1 variability to that of BL Lac objects, and this translates to an implicit warning for variability model builders. We also examine the X-ray morphologies and spectra for all components of the jet and compare these to the optical and radio data. We revisit 'offsets' (of structure/location) between observing bands and the spectral 'bowtie' problem (alpha[x] < alpha[ox]). These data are consistent with the 'modest beaming' synchrotron model previously proposed. This project was partially supported by NASA grants GO2-3144X, GO3-4124A, and GO4-5131X.
