[168.05] Fiber-fed Spectrographs at Moderate-to-High Resolution

S. J. Ratcliff (Middlebury College)

An on-going effort in astronomical spectroscopy at Middlebury College allows students to learn about the construction and performance of conventional optical spectrographs as well as observational spectroscopic techniques. The spectrographs are assembled in a laboratory near the observatory dome; optical fibers leading between the dome and the lab couple the telescope to the spectrographs. Using modular optical and opto-mechanical components, and a variety of detectors, we have assembled several different spectrographs at a variety of spectral resolutions. I will review the essential aspects of fiber-fed spectroscopy and describe the spectrographs as well as some of the projects in stellar, planetary, and solar spectroscopy for which they have been used.
