[88.02] EXIST and the Hard X-ray Background

R. D. Blandford (KIPAC), EXIST Team

Chandra and XMM have solved the mystery of the soft X-ray background up to 8 keV. The hard X-ray background has a larger energy density peaking at 20-30 keV, and likely includes a contribution from many distant AGN obscured at lower energies. A hard X-ray survey using EXIST should solve this mystery in combination with Spitzer space telescope as well as ground-based observations. A major contribution to solving this problem will also be made by NuSTAR if it is selected by NASA as a Small Explorer.
