[42.06] Testing The Empirical Relation Between Ultraviolet Color and Attenuation of Galaxies

M Seibert (Caltech), GALEX Science Team

We test the applicability of the empirical relation between ultraviolet (UV) color and far-UV attenuation, as derived for starburst galaxies (IRX-\beta), on a large sample of widely assorted galaxy types detected by the Galaxy Evolution Explorer and IRAS. We find that the direct application of this method systematically over estimates the far-UV attenuation. We demonstrate the effect of including additional parameters to improve the relation.
