The ARCADE project is a balloon-based instrument measuring the radiometric temperature of the CMB at frequencies as low as 3 GHz, where deviations in the absolute spectrum from that of a blackbody are expected to exist. A measurement of such a distortion could constrain models of clumping in low redshift galactic halos, and possibly the extent of non-equilibrium conditions in the early universe which would result from decays or annihilations of exotic particles.
A prototype experiment demonstrating the novel cryogenic design flew in June, 2003. I will present the results from that flight, which performed a measurement at 10 and 30 GHz, and discuss the payload under development which will observe at selection of frequencies from 3 to 90 GHz.
