[19.18] Low Resolution Infrared Spectroscopy Of Polars

R. K. Campbell, T.E. Harrison (NMSU)

We present low resolution (R ~ 250) infrared spectroscopy of several magnetic cataclysmic variables (Polars) obtained using SPEX on the IRTF. Included are phase resolved spectra of EF Eri. Recently, it has been shown that the large photometric variations in the H and K band are due to cyclotron emission features in this object. Our new data allows us to understand the photometric variations in the J band. These are due to the rising and falling cyclotron emission. We also present specta of EQ Cet, V1432 Aql, XY Ari, QQ Vul, and HU Aqr. EQ Cet shows a cyclotron feature at 1.05 \mum in addition to the single optical cyclotron feature at 8200 Å. This implies a lower magnetic field strength than had been previously derived. The magnetic system XY Ari lies beyond the Taurus-Auriga Molecualar Cloud and suffers at least 10 magnitudes of visual extinction.
