[18.03] CCD Photometry of the Eclipsing Binary V523 Cassiopeia

T. C. Smith (Dark Ridge Observatory), R. M. Genet (Orion Observatory)

Some 30+ complete light curves of the eclipsing binary V523 Cassiopeia were obtained at the Dark Ridge and Orion Observatories during their 2004 observing seasons. V523 Cas, a 10th magnitude binary with a K5V primary, has an orbital period of just 0.23 days (less than six hours), and is known to have a period modulated by the light-time effects of a third body on its photometric times of minima. Our objectives in obtaining such a large number of complete light curves in a single season were to: (1) help refine the binary’s ephemeris, (2) consider its period modulation, and (3) evaluate the precision of two approaches to time-of-minima determinations. One (classical) approach only utilizes observations on either side of the primary minima, while the other approach utilizes entire light curves in the determination.
