The homogeneous, large-sky search of the Nearby Supernova Factory (SNfactory) provides an ideal source for a well-controlled study of the rate of supernovae in the nearby Universe (z<0.1). The automated, deterministic pipeline developed for the SNfactory allows for a detailed efficiency study that brings a new level of sophistication to the field.
The rate of supernovae in the local universe is determined here by comparing the number of supernovae found in the prototype phase of the SNfactory search to a comprehensive Monte-Carlo simulation that propagates millions of supernovae through the SNfactory search pipeline. This database of simulated supernovae covers a comprehensive range of redshifts, times of explosion, and supernova types.
This well-controlled determination of the local supernova rate is compared with the distant (z~0.5) supernova rate, and resulting implications for the star formation history and supernova progenitor populations are discussed.
