[11.07] Kinematic modelling of the NLR of NGC1068

We present a study of high-resolution long-slit spectra of the narrow-line region in NGC 1068 obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The spectra were retrieved from the Multimission Archive at Space Telescope obtained from two visits and seven orbits of HST time. The spectra have a spatial resolution of 0.2 x 0.1 arcsec along each slit, and most of the spectra were obtained at parallel slit configurations at a position angle of 38 degrees. The [OIII] lines were observed with the G430M grating at a resolving power of 9000, which permitted accurate measurement of radial velocities and dispersions for each kinematic component. Biconical outflow models were generated to match the data and for comparison to previous models done for lower dispersion observations. The general trend is an increase in radial velocity proportional to distance from the nucleus followed by a roughly linear decrease after a few tens of parsec, similar to that seen in other Seyfert galaxies, indicating common acceleration/deceleration mechanisms. The biconical flow patterns of NGC 1068 suggested a larger position angle than previously derived. Models of radiation-driven clouds indicate larger velocities close to the nucleus than shown by the data.
