[35.06] Properties of the Shock Region in Direct Impact Algols

M. L. Rogers, M. T. Richards (Penn State University)

We have used analytical arguments and model atmospheres calculations and to determine the properties of the shock region in the class of Algol-type binaries which undergo direct impact accretion. The properties calculated include the velocity of the gas stream at the L1 point, stream velocity at the impact site, the ram pressure of the stream at impact, the atmospheric pressure at the shock, the depth at which the shock forms, and the surface area of the shock region.
