[38.01] Spin and active regions on 9P/Tempel 1

M. Belton (BSEI), N. Samarasinha (KPNO), O. Groussin (U. Maryland), P. Thomas (Cornell U.), J. Sunshine (SAIC), L. McFadden (U. Maryland), Deep Impact Science Team

During the approach of the Deep Impact spacecraft to 9P, photometric data were taken which, together with previous HST, Spitzer and ground-based data, allowed the spin state of the nucleus to be accurately determined. Numerous jet phenomena and outbursts were also seen in Deep Impact data and reported by collaborating observers. We use this knowledge to identify the locations of active regions on the surface of the nucleus. We provide a preliminary description of the geophysical nature of these regions and compare them with regions that are not active and to any new active terrain exposed by the impact. Supported by NASA contract NASW00004 to the University of Maryland.
