[37.01] Multifrequency Evolution of the Radio-Band Circular Polarization during an Outburst in 3C 279

H.D. Aller, M.F. Aller, P.A. Hughes (U. Michigan)

Three frequency (4.8, 8.0, 14.5 GHz) circular polarization (CP) observations of the AGN 3C 279 with the UMRAO 26-m paraboloid reveal temporal changes in both the sign and amplitude of the CP during a small burst. The differences in the CP sign between the three frequencies, coupled with the relatively large amplitude of the CP during the outburst, (|V| >0.8%), offers insight into the emission mechanisms of the jet. The behavior is consistent with the predictions from mode-conversion type models (Jones and O'Dell, 1977, ApJ, 214, 522). However, the wavelength-dependent evolution of the CP illustrates that a simplistic model to account for the sign of the CP via an ordered magnetic field, whose sense is related to the BH or accretion disk rotation, does not exist.
