[6.04] Imaging the Quiescent Black Hole Binary Candidate V404 Cyg

M.P. Rupen, A.J. Mioduszewski, V. Dhawan (NRAO)

While many Galactic black hole binaries have been imaged in outburst, few have been imaged in quiescence. Here we present high-resolution observations of the black hole binary candidate V404 Cyg, made with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) and the phased Very Large Array (VLA). V404 Cyg has been in a quiescent, low/hard X-ray state for several years, with a (scaled) luminosity 10-100 times lower than most Galactic black holes, but still ~100 times higher than starved black holes like Sgr A*. This milliarcsecond radio imaging should establish whether the radio emission in this intermediate luminosity range takes the form of a jet, as assumed in most current models. We should also obtain an excellent astrometric position for V404 Cyg, leading (with future observations) to interesting measurements of or limits on V404 Cyg's proper motion and parallax.
