[5.01] White Dwarf / Red Dwarf Binaries Resolved with the Hubble Space Telescope

J. Farihi (Gemini Observatory), S. Wachter (Spizter Science Center), D.W. Hoard (Spitzer Science Center)

First results are presented for a Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera Snapshot survey of white dwarfs with likely red dwarf companions. Of 48 targets observed and analyzed so far, 27 systems are totally or partially resolved into two or more components, while 15 systems are almost certainly unresolved binaries. The results presented here appear to provide the first empirical evidence for the bimodal distribution among binary systems containing at least one white dwarf.
