[74.29] The X-ray Point Source Population of M 17, the Omega Nebula

P. S. Broos, K. V. Getman, L. K. Townsley (Penn State)

We present a high-spatial-resolution X-ray study of the point source population of the Omega Nebula (M 17), obtained in a 40-ksec Chandra/ACIS observation. NGC 6618, the massive cluster powering this H II region, is resolved at the arcsecond level into over 800 stellar sources. Chandra resolves the central O4-O4 binary and detects most of the O and early-B stars in the relatively unobscured parts of the field. Deeply embedded sources are detected in the dense cores M 17 North and M 17 Southwest. Hundreds of magnetically active pre-main sequence stars are scattered throughout the region. We show X-ray images, spectra of interesting sources, and statistical studies of the young stellar population of M17.
