[68.06] Do wide BDs and their primaries form hierarchical configurations?

S.J. Thomas, N.S. van der Bliek (CTIO/NOAO), M.F. Sterzik (ESO), A.A. Tokovinin (CTIO/NOAO)

According to current star formation theories and simulations of dynamical processes occurring in small-N clusters, we expect an enhanced fraction of binary stars among the primaries of systems with a brown dwarf (BD) or very-low mass (VLM) companion in a wide orbit (e.g. Bate et al. 2002, MNRAS 336, 705).

To test this theoretical result, we have obtained high resolution AO imaging data of six systems, which are known to have a wide BD or VLM companion (separations > 100AU) to investigate the duplicity of the primaries. We present the results of this study.
