[115.24] Wavefront Sensing and Control Technologies for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)

Accurate wavefront sensing and control (WFS&C) of the primary and secondary mirrors is critical to ensure the optical alignment of the 6.6 meter James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). JWST will be deployed in space from its stowed configuration and aligned on-orbit. Imagery from a science camera is down-linked to the ground, where algorithms determine the optimal positions for the mirrors and the resultant commands are up-linked to phase the telescope.

This paper will present an overview of the WFS&C processes, and discuss two related key technologies: coarse and fine phasing. A primary mirror coarse phasing demonstration with segmented mirrors was successfully performed at the Keck Observatory using the same method as will be done on JWST. In addition, the one-meter JWST Testbed Telescope is being used to demonstrate this and other WFS&C algorithms and hardware.
