[122.17] Preliminary Results from the AAVSO Infrared Photometry Group

The American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO) established a near-infrared observers group in 2003. Since its inception, this group has been actively observing variable stars with the Optec SSP-4 infrared photometer. When the SSP-4 is combined with a small telescope (<0.30m), observations of variable stars as faint as the 4th magnitude are possible. Currently, there are 27 variable stars in the AAVSO Infrared Photometry program, including eclipsing binaries, Cepheid variables, and semiregular, Mira, and long-period variables; over 600 J and H band observations are available on-line from the AAVSO International Database, and observations are continuing. We highlight the contributions that the AAVSO observer community is making to this important research area, and present current results on five variable stars: Algol, beta Lyr, Mira, R Leo, and eta Aql.
