[123.01] The RAVE Survey: the Galactic Escape Velocity

The Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) is an ambitious all-sky spectroscopic survey to measure radial velocities and stellar atmosphere parameters (temperature, metallicity, surface gravity) of up to one million stars using the 6dF multi-object spectrograph on the 1.2-m UK Schmidt Telescope of the Anglo-Australian Observatory (AAO). The radial velocities measured in this survey are accurate to a few kilometers per second, ideal for a range of investigations into the kinematics and dynamics of the Milky Way Galaxy. Our current sample size is an unprecedented approximately 80000 stars, and from this we have extracted those with extreme velocities to recover an estimate for the local escape velocity. We will describe the sample, the technique and the results.
