[42.10] Chandra Deep Observation of the \rho Ophiuchi Dark Cloud

Y. Tsuboi (Penn. State Univ.), K. Hamaguchi, K. Imanishi, K. Koyama (Kyoto Univ.)

We observed \rho Ophiuchi dark cloud with the Chandra X-ray Observatory for a 100 ksec exposure in April 2000. The image taken with ACIS-I array revealed about 90 sources in the 0.5--9 keV band in the 17' \times 17' field of view. Hard X-rays (> 2 keV band) were detected from 16 of the 26 Class I protostars; the IR and the X-ray positions are strictly correspondent within <1\prime\prime accuracy. Hence the Chandra observations indicated that Class I protostars can emit X-rays certainly. Half of the detected Class I protostars showed clear flares, some of which occurred intermittently on the same sources. Most of the Class I protostars had temperature of several keV and absorption column of order of 1022 H cm-2.
