[12.04] XMM-Newton Spectroscopy of Circinus X-1

R. E. Shirey (University of California, Santa Barbara)

We present results from two recent coordinated XMM-Newton/RXTE observations of the unusual LMXB Circinus X-1. Almost all of the first observation occurred during a very long (7 hr) absorption dip, while the second occurred while the source was in a much brighter (flaring) state. We compare spectra from these two states obtained with the EPIC-PN camera and the Reflection Grating Spectrometers on XMM. For example, the absorption-dip spectra show very prominent Fe K-alpha lines from different ionization species, while the lines are not apparent in the bright-state spectra.
