[74.05] A Search for Astrospheric Ly\alpha Emission Around 40~Eri~A

Hydrodynamic models of our heliosphere predict that the heliosphere should be filled with hot neutral hydrogen gas created by the collision between the solar wind and the surrounding interstellar medium. In UV spectra from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), heliospheric H~I Ly\alpha absorption from this hot H~I has been detected. Absorption from analogous ``astrospheric'' H~I surrounding many other solar-like stars has also been detected. In principle, this astrospheric H~I previously seen only in absorption might also be observable in emission, since the H~I will scatter stellar Ly\alpha photons. We report on an attempt using HST to detect astrospheric Ly\alpha emission around the nearby K1~V star 40~Eri~A, for which a tentative detection of astrospheric H~I absorption already exists.
