[18.07] Investigating The Correlation Between Lag and Luminosity With BeppoSAX and HETE-2 Energy Dependant Light Curve Data

We present a cross correlation analysis of BeppoSAX and HETE-2 energy dependent gamma-ray burst (GRB) light curves in an attempt to confirm the lag-luminosity anti-correlation reported by Norris et. al. (2000). This relationship suggests a connection between the delay or lag of the arrival times of a GRB's high and low energy photons with its absolute luminosity, hence allowing for a direct determination of a burst's luminosity from the gamma-ray data alone. The original Norris et. al. results were obtained using high time resolution data from the BATSE instrument onboard the CGRO spacecraft, here we perform a similar analysis using data from the BeppoSAX and HETE-2 spacecrafts. We find a general anti-correlation trend does exist between the delay in the 2-10 keV and 10-26 keV Wide Field Camera (WFC) photon arrival times and luminosity for GRBs with known redshift that were detected by BeppoSAX. This trend is also seen in the delay between the summed WFC (2-26 keV) and GBRM (40-700 keV) light curves. Unfortunately, the low signal to noise of many of the HETE-2 light curves proved to be inconclusive in observing a similar trend. We discuss what these results mean for the possibility of confirming and utilizing this correlation with data from the upcoming Swift spacecraft.
