[142.06] Cosmic shear on small angular scales from the WFPC2 Archival Parallels

Y. Wadadekar, S. Casertano, H. C. Ferguson, A. S. Fruchter (STScI)

We present our preliminary cosmic shear analysis of data from the WFPC2 Archival Parallels Project. The data cover over 2 square degrees in about 1500 pointings, the majority in just one filter (F606W). At typical exposure times of 1000s to 5000s per pointing, we detect 30 to 60 resolved galaxies per square arcmin. This data set is about 5 times larger than any previously used WFPC2 data, and allows us to probe cosmic shear on scales from 2 arcmin to 10 arcsec, marking the transition from linear to non-linear structure growth at redshift ~ 1. We compare the results obtained with both moment-measuring and image decomposition (shapelet) techniques, and use a combination of a priori models and on-orbit measurements to determine and correct for the WFPC2 point-spread function.
