[50.01] From the Bottom of the Earth!: Astronomy from the South Pole

From the very bottom of the Earth, a band of intrepid astrophysicists have been exploring the wonders of the universe. Braving temperatures below -100F (200 Kelvin) during the six months of continuous darkness, they have built and operated a series of telescopes and instruments to study the big bang, neutrinos, and star formation.

Pack your bags (and your parkas) and let me take you on a journey to the bottom of the world. As I describe the discoveries we've made on the frontiers of astronomy, I'll also give you a feeling for what it is like to live on one of the last frontiers on the planet.
